BASIC WRESTLING FUNDAMENTALS

Freestyle wrestling is a hard game and A successful wrestler needs to master only a couple of leg attack takedowns, and escape or reversal, a ride/breakdown, and one pinning combination. However, in order to master this small number of moves will require drilling regularly all of the possible setups, counters, and finishes. It has been my observation that the world-class wrestlers spend the majority of their time drilling the moves to perfection, and don’t really wrestle ‘live” that much. Of course during their careers they have wrestled “live” so much that most things are second nature to them.

freestyle wrestling

The following are the ten things that I believe are essential to become a champion.

1.Be academically eligible. If you are you aren’t allowed to compete you can’t be a champion no matter how good you are.

2. Be strong enough to not be over-powered by any opponent. It isn’t necessary to be the strongest wrestler, but it helps. You need enough upper body strength to neutralize your strongest opponent’s attempts to over power you.

3. Be in as good or better condition than any of your opponents. Being able to wrestle as hard the last 10 seconds of the match as the first 10 seconds is very important Countless numbers of matches.

4. Have a superior leg attack defense. The highest percentage takedowns are leg attacks i.e. single leg, double leg, high crotch, Ankle pick, inside and outside fireman’s carry. If you can stop all of the takedown attempts of any opponent you can wrestle more aggressively.

5. Have a superior defense on bottom. You cannot get ridden for more than 15 seconds if you want to be a successful college wrestler. A inside leg standup is probably the most common escape used at the college level. You also can’t let your opponent break you down or turn you for a nearfall or pin.

6. Master a leg attack series. A single leg or double leg takedown should be the first takedown you master.

7. Master a breakdown/ride. It is important to be able to control your opponent on the mat. In many cases it will be necessary to win by 1 point. In college riding time frequently determines who wins thematch.

8. Master a pinning combination series. Half nelsons, cradles, chicken wings, etc. You need to know how to set up your opponent so he’ll fall into a pin hold before he realizes it.

9. There will be times when there is less than one minute left in a match and you are trailing by 3 or more points. In these situations a leg takedown isn’t going to win the match for you, it will only make the score closer. You need a 5-point move from the down and neutral position in these situations. This is when it is time to pull something out of your “bag of tricks”. It will be a move that is fundamentally sound, but is not frequently seen by most wrestlers.

10. Last, but certainly not least is mental toughness. In my opinion wrestling is 90 percent mental. The successful wrestlers in college or at the world level are pretty equal in terms of technical skills. Occasionally there will be one superior athlete compared to the others. However, it usually comes down to the wrestler who wants to win the most that determines the outcome of a match. I’ve seen wrestlers who weren’t as good as athletes as other wrestlers, but they found ways to win. A wrestling match is a test of “wills”, if you keep constant pressure on your opponent throughout the entire match eventually almost all of them will give up at some point, because they are exhausted physically and/or mentally.

Want to Strengthen your muscle’s for wrestling ?

Freestyle Wrestling was hard work and that a wrestler needed to have good form in order to maximize economy of motion and leverage. They needed explosive power to be able to quickly lift, hoist or throw an opponent .This is often why wrestlers are so well known for their strength and conditioning amongst other athletes. The key to developing explosive power for take downs requires that one develop the fast twitch muscle fibers in the core and along the posterior chain. Fast twitch Muscle fibers are used for high explosive, short in duration movements such as power lifting and feats of strength. Along with basic high weight low repetition exercises for power lifting; this article has some other practical exercises designed to develop high explosive brutal strength for devastating takedowns

V-Ups

Vougars Honors Wrestling

All wrestlers should include V-ups into their training routine. V-ups work most of your core, but mainly develop your lower abdominals and hip flexors. Find a mat, carpet, or another soft area that you can use to do this exercise:

  • Lie on your back with your arms extended above your head, and your legs extended with your feet together.
  • Raise your legs and torso at the same time, forming the shape of a “v” with your body.
  • Keep your legs and arms straight. Don’t bend your knees or elbows!
  • Keep your buttocks in contact with the ground as you touch your toes.
  • Lower your arms and legs, and return to your original position.

Leg Raises

Vougars Honors Wrestling

Leg raises are also another great exercise for the lower abdominals and hip flexors. This exercise is very similar to the V-up, except you do not use your upper body. Find a comfortable area to exercise and you’re ready to go:

  • Lie on your back with your legs extended and your feet together.
  • Place your hands under your buttocks with your palms facing down.
  • Lift your legs off of the ground until the soles of your feet are facing upwards and your legs are completely vertical.
  • Push your hips slightly upwards, reaching through the soles of your feet.
  • Keep your feet together and do not bend your knees.
  • Slowly lower your legs to their original positions.
  • Repeat 10-50 times to complete one set. Do these in sets of 1-5.

Supermans

Vougars Honors Wrestling

Your lower back is a critical part of your core, and “supermans” help to target this group of muscles. This exercise helps to strengthen your abdominals, as well as your gluteals and hamstrings. Find a spot on the ground to begin this exercise:

  • Lie on your stomach with your arms extended forward with your palms facing down.
  • Keep your legs extended with your feet together.
  • Slowly raise your legs and arms off of the floor simultaneously, while keeping your pelvis in contact with the ground. Continue raising your legs and arms until you cannot raise them any higher.
  • Try to keep this motion slow and smooth; don’t pull or jerk.
  • At the top of the motion, hold the position for 10-60 seconds for one set. Complete 1-10 sets for this exercise.

Side Crunches

Vougars Honors Wrestling

Side crunches specifically target your obliques, but also help to strengthen other parts of your abdominals and lower back. Find a place on a mat, a carpeted area, a patch of grass, or another soft area to begin:

  • Lie on your back.
  • Bend your knees and turn your hips in one direction. Both of your knees should be together and pointing the same way. If you have turned your hips to the right, the outside of your right leg will be touching the floor.
  • Use your opposite-side hand to reach behind your head. So, if you’ve turned your hips to the right, use your left hand to grab behind your head. Relax your other arm at your side; you won’t be using it.
  • Raise your upper body off the ground and with the arm that’s behind your head, try to touch your elbow to the same-side hip.
  • Return to the original position with your back flat on the ground.
  • Repeat this motion 10-25 times, and then switch sides to complete one set. Complete 1-5 sets, alternating between each side.

These above exercise is really helpful to strengthen your muscle. There is many wrestling clubs and clinics present who provide you training in all these and one them is VHW Wrestling Club

Learn to be a Smart Wrestler

Freestyle Wrestling is by far the toughest sport on the planet.  You have to constantly push yourself and strive to get better and learn from your mistakes to be successful. Did you know most wrestlers will lose more than they win when they first start wrestling?  Losing is a natural part of wrestling.

summer wrestling camp

Some of the tips that I have sharing here which is essential to become successful wrestler

Always Listen what your Coach said:-

A wise person once told me to listen to people who know more than me.  I have learned this applies to wrestling.  It doesn’t matter if you’re a youth wrestler or an experienced high school wrestler.

summer wrestling camp

If a wrestling coach takes the time help you by offering advice to become a better wrestler, you listen to that coach.  In most cases that coach has probably forgot more about the sport of wrestling than what you know.

Know your strengths:-

Any good wrestler is better at certain aspects of a wrestling match.  For example, a wrestler may be better in the top position than the bottom position.  A wrestler needs to know what a kid is best at and try to put himself in that situation.

Know your Opponents Strengths:-

Likewise, a wrestler should know what his opponent is good at.  Your game plan should be to stop an opponent’s attack by defending his best moves.  For example,  if a wrestler executes the best fireman’s carry you have ever seen, then you avoid tying up with that particular wrestler.

Make Good Decisions on the Mat:-

A good wrestler understands the sport and how to avoid bad decisions.  This means knowing how much time is left in a period, where you are on the mat, whether to attack or defend, etc… This comes with lots of mat time.

A Good Wrestler Learns from Mistakes:-

Wrestling is a sport where most people will lose more than they win. That is why I tell people that wrestling imitates life.  Successful people fail more than they are successful.  The important aspect of wrestling is to never quit. You identify your mistakes and you learn from them.

Wrestling and its facts,,,,,,

Wrestling refers to contests where two person physically engage one another in an attempt to gain control, often by utilizing hand-to-hand techniques designed to throw their opponents off balance and knock them down. History of Wrestling is very long.

freestyle wrestling

History of Wrestling

Wrestling is an Old English term that seems to have originated some time previous to 1100 A.D. However, wrestling as a practice is much older than that. Along with this, there is no specific line that can be drawn, as is the case with some other martial arts styles, when it comes to the evolution of wrestling. Nearly every culture boasts a form of hand-to-hand combat designed to throw opponents off balance.

freestyle wrestling

Reinforcing this, cave drawings in France from over 15,000 years ago appear to depict people engaged in acts of wrestling. A grappling style originating in China called Shuai Jiao is reportedly over 4,000 years old. Artwork in Egypt shows people engaged in wrestling before 2,000 BC. Further, both the Greeks and Romans engaged in the martial art to a great extent as well.

In Europe, many of the styles of wrestling were originally rather loosely organized. Eventually these became more organized, however, which led to the style of Greco-Roman wrestling. Greco-Roman wrestling refers to a style of grappling where lower body attacks are disallowed (all throws are executed using upper body clinches and holds). From there, Greco-Roman and modern freestyle grappling competitions became formal in continental Europe and money prizes were offered to the victors.

Along with this, European nobility often practiced the art of wrestling, and by 1896 Greco-Roman wrestling was so popular that it was added to the initial Olympic Games. Freestyle wrestling (1904) and women’s freestyle wrestling (2004) were both also eventually included.

Characteristics of Wrestling

The majority of wrestling styles can be defined by techniques such as clinching, takedowns, takedown defense, holding, and more. Additionally, some wrestling styles, such as catch wrestling, utilize submission holds or techniques meant to force an opponent to give up or face the consequences of a joint lock or choke hold.

Basic Goals of Wrestling

Wrestling stylists generally work to take their opponents to the ground and control them there by utilizing clinches, locks, takedowns, throws, and more. From there, the goals of what wrestlers do tend to depend on the style in question.

Sometimes wrestlers may have the goal of pinning their opponent. Other times, they may hope to end the fight utilizing a submission hold.

History of wrestling

For the ancient Greeks, wrestling was a very big deal. It virtually defined the original Olympic Games as the marquee event. Wrestling history has recorded various forms of wrestling (and boxing), and many of the details as to how they have evolved.

Professional wrestling, a sport and performing art, is a popular form of entertainment in North America, Latin America, Europe, and Japan. Beginning in France around 1830, wrestling became a popular sport in Europe, the Austro-Hungarian Empire and North America during the 19th Century.

freestyle wrestling

The French developed the modern Greco-Roman style which was finalized by the 19th century and by then; wrestling was featured in many fairs and festivals. Greco-Roman wrestling and modern freestyle wrestling were soon regulated in formal competitions, in part resulting from the rise of gymnasiums and athletic clubs.

freestyle wrestling

On continental Europe, prize money was offered in large sums to the winners of Greco-Roman tournaments, and freestyle wrestling spread rapidly in the United Kingdom and in the United States after the American Civil War. Wrestling professionals soon increased the popularity of Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling, worldwide.

  • Greco-Roman wrestling became an event at the first modern Olympic Games, in Athens in 1896. Since 1908, the event has been in every Summer Olympics.

  • Freestyle wrestling became an Olympic event, in 1904. Women’s freestyle wrestling was added to the Summer Olympics in 2004.

Since 1921, the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA) has regulated amateur wrestling as an athletic discipline, while professional wrestling has largely become infused with theatrics but still requires athletic ability. Today, various countries send national wrestling teams to the Olympics, including Russia, Iran, Turkey, Mongolia, India, Azerbaijan, Gambia, the United States and several ex-U.S.S.R nations.

And there is many wrestling clubs which provide trainings in freestyle wrestling in which vhwclub is the best.

What is Freestyle wrestling?

Have you considered putting your child in freestyle wrestling? Well in recent time I learned a lot about both styles of wrestling. Both Greco and Freestyle wrestling are very dynamic and exciting. Each one has its slight differences. In this blog I want to tell you about freestyle wrestling .

freestyle wrestling

Freestyle wrestling is a combat sport which confronts two male competitors who try to gain control over their opponent through the use of throws, locks, leg trips, and clinching techniques. Contrary to Greco-Roman which only allows the use of the upper body, all Freestyle holds can involve the legs in order to ultimately pin the the opponent’s shoulders to the mat. If a wrestler manages to do so, victory by “fall” is proclaimed, otherwise, the match pursues until the end of the regular time and the winner is decided according to the technical points scored.

Currently, men’s freestyle wrestling is divided into four main age categories internationally: schoolboys, cadets, juniors, and seniors.

Schoolboys (young men ages 13–14; or age 12 with a medical certificate and parental authorization) competing in freestyle and Greco-Roman do so in one of the following 10 weight classes:-
• 29 to 32 kg (64 to 70 lb)
• 35 kg (77 lb)
• 38 kg (84 lb)
• 42 kg (93 lb)
• 47 kg (104 lb)
• 53 kg (117 lb)
• 59 kg (130 lb)
• 66 kg (146 lb)
• 73 kg (161 lb)
• 73 to 85 kg (161 to 187 lb)

Cadets (young men ages 15–16; or age 14 with a medical certificate and parental authorization) competing in freestyle and Greco-Roman do so in one of the following 10 weight classes:-
• 39 to 42 kg (86 to 92 lb)
• 46 kg (101 lb)
• 50 kg (110 lb)
• 54 kg (119 lb)
• 58 kg (128 lb)
• 63 kg (139 lb)
• 69 kg (152 lb)
• 76 kg (167 lb)
• 85 kg (187 lb)
• 85 to 100 kg (187 to 220 lb)

Juniors (young men ages 18 to 20; or age 17 with a medical certificate and parental authorization) competing in freestyle and Greco-Roman do so in one of the following eight weight classes:-
• 46 to 50 kg (101 to 110 lb)
• 55 kg (121 lb)
• 60 kg (132 lb)
• 66 kg (145 lb)
• 74 kg (163 lb)
• 84 kg (185 lb)
• 96 kg (211 lb)
• 96 to 120 kg (211 to 264 lb)

Seniors (men ages 20 and up) competing in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling do so in one of the following seven weight classes:-
• 50 to 55 kg (110 to 121 lb)

Wresting in New York

Our world is full of good and bad things. It depends on us that what we follow. If we follow good, we get good and if we follow bad, bad we get. There are always these two sides you always find and you have to choose one yourself what you want. Every corner, every side of this world is full with these two sides and you can find it in every field.

summer wrestling campWhen there was a starting of this world there was nothing, only except some people who did not know how they would survive on this earth but time gets going and they learned with this passing time many things and developed for themselves too. They learned to plough the land, learned to seed it and they knew that if anything one wants to get then one has to struggle for it. With eating and graining food things they invented many other things for their entertainment and for getting rid of their boredness . At that time there were no cinema and movie things like, so for their entertainment they had competitions, competitions for physical strength. They invented many sports for measuring one’s physical strength and one of them was wrestling.

It was the sport that was liked and loved by everyone at that time and it is still being loved and liked around the world. Wrestling develops according and with time having its many styles, forms and techniques and now it is competed in Olympic Games. There are many sportsmen from around the world come to take part in it and I am one of them who recently participated in this hustle bustle sport wrestling in my country and local competitions. I take part from Suffolk County wrestling club.

It is the most admired wrestling club in New York where many wrestling competitions are held and many participants from nearby Counties take part in it. You can check its schedules and other updates that what is going to happen there.Wrestling is one of my favorite sports from the other strength and muscle sports. When I was a small kid I saw people doing swimming, playing Tennis, Football and other sports and I thought about them how much power and strength they have to spend on playing these sports and doing this they become strong but how much. My fondness was always towards a sport that could give me ultimate power, confidence and a real feeling of winning something winnable and I found my fondness in wrestling. I admire other sports and games too but I admire wrestling most.

In coming time I am going to take part in wrestling County Nassau where many other Counties’ wrestling winners are coming to participate. It is going to be a huge thing where many people are coming to see us. It is all New York wrestling. I suggest all young people for coming to see this club competition. It will teach you many things about wrestling because you can learn by seeing and the best with your eyes you see the best you learn. It is wrestling in long island.

vhw wrestling club

So it is all wrestling time in New York or you can say it is going to be New York wrestling. So I will suggest everyone to come and witness this amazing, strengthful sport wrestling.
