Freestyle Wrestling is by far the toughest sport on the planet.  You have to constantly push yourself and strive to get better and learn from your mistakes to be successful. Always Listen what your Coach said:-

A wise person once told me to listen to people who know more than me.  I have learned this applies to wrestling.  It doesn’t matter if you’re a youth wrestler or an experienced high school wrestler.

If a wrestling coach takes the time help you by offering advice to become a better wrestler, you listen to that coach.  In most cases that coach has probably forgot more about the sport of wrestling than what you know.

Know your strengths:-

Any good wrestler is better at certain aspects of a wrestling match.  For example, a wrestler may be better in the top position than the bottom position.  A wrestler needs to know what a kid is best at and try to put himself in that situation.

Know your Opponents Strengths:-

Likewise, a wrestler should know what his opponent is good at.  Your game plan should be to stop an opponent’s attack by defending his best moves.  For example,  if a wrestler executes the best fireman’s carry you have ever seen, then you avoid tying up with that particular wrestler.

Make Good Decisions on the Mat:-

A good wrestler understands the sport and how to avoid bad decisions.  This means knowing how much time is left in a period, where you are on the mat, whether to attack or defend, etc… This comes with lots of mat time.

A Good Wrestler Learns from Mistakes:-

Wrestling is a sport where most people will lose more than they win. That is why I tell people that wrestling imitates life.  Successful people fail more than they are successful.  The important aspect of wrestling is to never quit. You identify your mistakes and you learn from them.

History of Wrestling

Wrestling is an Old English term that seems to have originated some time previous to 1100 A.D. However, wrestling as a practice is much older than that. Along with this, there is no specific line that can be drawn, as is the case with some other martial arts styles, when it comes to the evolution of wrestling. Nearly every culture boasts a form of hand-to-hand combat designed to throw opponents off balance.

Reinforcing this, cave drawings in France from over 15,000 years ago appear to depict people engaged in acts of wrestling. A grappling style originating in China called Shuai Jiao is reportedly over 4,000 years old. Artwork in Egypt shows people engaged in wrestling before 2,000 BC. Further, both the Greeks and Romans engaged in the martial art to a great extent as well.

In Europe, many of the styles of wrestling were originally rather loosely organized. Eventually these became more organized, however, which led to the style of Greco-Roman wrestling. Greco-Roman wrestling refers to a style of grappling where lower body attacks are disallowed (all throws are executed using upper body clinches and holds). From there, Greco-Roman and modern freestyle grappling competitions became formal in continental Europe and money prizes were offered to the victors.

Along with this, European nobility often practiced the art of wrestling, and by 1896 Greco-Roman wrestling was so popular that it was added to the initial Olympic Games. Freestyle wrestling (1904) and women’s freestyle wrestling (2004) were both also eventually included.

The two most common international styles of wrestling are greco-roman and freestyle.  Techniques used in both styles are very important in the development of a school aged wrestler, especially as they become physically mature and can perform the more dynamic lifts and throws.  Freestyle wrestling will help an athlete become better from the neutral position (on their feet) and teach them how to defend against being put into danger positions (on their back).  Wrestling for a state high school title or at the collegiate level is becoming more and more rare for wrestler who have not participated in the two most popular international styles.

If you are passionate about wrestling and want to get better with the sport then here are some freestyle wrestling techniques that you can practice in your training sessions. Irrespective of whether you are an expert or beginner, you can always do better with some new moves under your belt. Sharpen your wrestling skills with these great moves mentioned below:

Ankle lock.

This freestyle wrestling techniques is accomplished by tightly grabbing the ankle of the other wrestler. You have to sweep them to the ground by placing the ankle in the elbows crook and grabbing the arm and toes with the help of opposite hand. You have to Force the other wrestler onto his back and then twist the foot. The opponents shoulder will be forced to the ground when you hold their elevated ankle with a tight grasp.

Leglock.

Another freestyle wrestling technique that involves the use of legs is the leg lock. Get the opponent lying on their stomach and sit on their butt area. Grab their lower legs and pull them towards your body. This will cause pain because of the hyper extension of the opponent’s leg. Do not harm your competitor, so only use force that will trap them and get them to surrender.

Head lock.

One of the popular freestyle wrestling techniques is the head lock. Go behind the other wrestler and place your arms around their bicep and head area. Grab your arm with the opposite hand, keeping it in front of your face.

Suplex.

Similar to the professional freestyle wrestling techniques, this freestyle tactic involves grabbing your opponent from around the waist by using both your arms and lifting them to a level. When they are lifted the next step is to fall forward over them.

Leg sweep.

The final freestyle move is the leg sweep. In this you have to hold your opponent from the upper chest area and make use of your single leg to sweep their leg from under. By pushing forward your opponent will go crashing down on the mat and you will definitely score more points.

Double leg takedown.

Quite like single leg take down, double leg takedown is among freestyle wrestling techniques that can be used by both novice and expert wrestlers. This move is anticipated in the standing position with a slight bending of knees. You need to grab on to the opponents legs and drive them forward.

Bear hug.

Single- hip toss.

Surprise the other wrestler with this brilliant throw. This technique is performed particularly when the other wrestler sprawls a single leg move. You will need to hold his back with one of your arms and take a step backwards inside. Then pop your hip and throw him on your hips.

Remember these tips are only for Freestyle wrestling and are not acceptable in in Greco Roman style or Folk style. Work with a coach before attempting these freestyle wrestling techniques in a competition.

What is Freestyle wrestling?

Have you considered putting your child in freestyle wrestling? Well in recent time I learned a lot about both styles of wrestling. Both Greco and Freestyle wrestling are very dynamic and exciting. Each one has its slight differences. In this blog I want to tell you about freestyle wrestling .

Freestyle wrestling is a combat sport which confronts two male competitors who try to gain control over their opponent through the use of throws, locks, leg trips, and clinching techniques. Contrary to Greco-Roman which only allows the use of the upper body, all Freestyle holds can involve the legs in order to ultimately pin the the opponent’s shoulders to the mat. If a wrestler manages to do so, victory by “fall” is proclaimed, otherwise, the match pursues until the end of the regular time and the winner is decided according to the technical points scored.

Currently, men’s freestyle wrestling is divided into four main age categories internationally: schoolboys, cadets, juniors, and seniors.

Schoolboys (young men ages 13–14; or age 12 with a medical certificate and parental authorization) competing in freestyle and Greco-Roman do so in one of the following 10 weight classes:-
• 29 to 32 kg (64 to 70 lb)
• 35 kg (77 lb)
• 38 kg (84 lb)
• 42 kg (93 lb)
• 47 kg (104 lb)
• 53 kg (117 lb)
• 59 kg (130 lb)
• 66 kg (146 lb)
• 73 kg (161 lb)
• 73 to 85 kg (161 to 187 lb)

Cadets (young men ages 15–16; or age 14 with a medical certificate and parental authorization) competing in freestyle and Greco-Roman do so in one of the following 10 weight classes:-

• 54 kg (119 lb)

• 66 kg (145 lb)

It was time when I was just 16 years old studying in a school when one day a wrestling coach came and told us about this sport because in next few days some students were going to be chosen for ny wrestling competition. That coach told us everything about this sport and how beneficial it is and how one can get benefited with it if learns it. The one thing which I liked most about it was the thing that it is one of the few sports which is played in Olympic Games and that thing attracted me because I knew that in this sport I could make my career.

Next day in school some techniques were going to be taught by the coach for preliminary preparation provided we could get into a wrestling club and could take part in NY wrestling competition. Some students including me were taught some techniques by the coach. I think it was the best time when I learned something essential and needed for life thing in my life. Some wrestling lessons which I learned in school change my total scenario towards the things. I realized that this sport is not just about winning or fighting, it is just about self confidence.

Freestyle wrestlingAfter some time I joined a summer wrestling camp near my town where I learned many thing about this sport and about its techniques and I knew that this sport is practiced around the world then I knew that I was not the only one who was learning it there were many who were learning it. I also knew that it is the one of the oldest and organized sports in history.

The wrestling which I was learning is a type of free style wrestling and has its origin in ‘catch as catch can’ wrestling. The one thing I was taught during my training in wrestling club was an ultimate goal of this sport or you could say a final punch to your opponents. It was just to throw and pin you opponent down to the mat which resulted in a win. I defeated many keeping this goal in my mind and won an Olympic Gold medal. At that time I was 24 only.

After winning a gold medal I was preparing for another competition where I was bestowed with many awards and remarks like strong man, great man, tough man and many others. Listening these words were a great experience for me and it seems good when in a crowd of thousand and million people you are greeted with these words and comments. After winning awards I am now running my own summer wrestling in long island where I am giving training to many young and wannbes wrestlers.

I love this sport and want to excel it more and want to win it more and also want to teach others provided they can learn about this sport. It is not only for winning competitions but also for self defense provided you could be afraid of nothing.  For me wrestling is the thing which gives me everything and I like it because it makes me powerful and seem like I am flying high in the sky.
